Philippines, Vietnam boost military ties amid South China Sea tensions

The Philippines and Vietnam will advance defense and military relations and deepen collaboration on maritime security, a significant step by two countries concerned over Beijing’s assertive actions in the South China Sea.

Vietnamese Defense Minister Gen. Phan Van Giang held talks with Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro during his August 2024 visit to Manila, where he also met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

“The ministers expressed their unwavering commitment to deepen defense and military cooperation through continued interaction and engagements at all levels,” the Philippine National Defense Department stated.

Giang and Teodoro signed letters of intent to enhance disaster response and military medicine engagements, and the nations planned to sign a defense cooperation agreement. They also agreed to resolve disagreements peacefully and within the framework of international law.

“The two sides shared the importance of maintaining peace, stability, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, also known as the West Philippine Sea or the South China Sea,” Giang said.

The meeting came amid simmering tension in the South China Sea and international concern about possible escalation, with China Coast Guard ships blocking, harassing and ramming Philippine vessels.

“While we face common threats, we will work together in facing these threats in the spirit of ASEAN solidarity,” Teodoro said, referencing the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Manila and Hanoi are members.  Reuters
